Joyful Lama Meaningful Dharma

Drupon Rinpoche giving precious teachings at KSD Edinburgh.

KSDE Official Opening Ceremony

A happy throng gathered at Samye Dzong Edinburgh over the weekend of September 24th and 25th 2016 to enjoy an eventful and meaningful time with Lama Yeshe Rinpoche.

After giving Refuge and an inspiring public talk, Lama Rinpoche presided over the Official Opening Ceremony alongside Guest of Honour Sir David Steel. As they cut the ceremonial ribbon across the threshold, the jahlings, ably played by Ani Lhamo and Ani Kunzang, signalled the door to open as if by magic and piped everyone inside.

There followed a Guru Rinpoche Tsok Puja lead by Tulku Urgyen and Ani Rinchen Khandro, culminating in a sacred feast enjoyed by all. And as Lama Yeshe Rinpoche left to return to Samye Ling, a beautiful rainbow appeared over Leith, surely a blessing from Guru Rinpoche himself!

The opening day was documented by ace photographer Ai-Lan, a selection of whose memorable images can be seen below.

Happy Losar, Good News and Thanks

Losar Tashi Delegs for the Tibetan New Year on February 9th

As Losar falls on a Tuesday we will be doing a special Chenrezig Puja dedicated to World Peace, the Health and Happiness of all beings and to the long life of all the precious gurus. In particular we dedicate to the continuous flourishing of the Buddha’s activities by His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa. Everybody is welcome.

His Holiness is currently presiding over the Kagyu Monlams in Bodhgaya, India and even though we may not be able to be there in person we can nevertheless benefit from the teachings by following this link to the live webcast:
http://www.kagyumonlam.org/Webcast/live_webcast.html

Good News – Ringu Tulku Rinpoche will be teaching at KSD Edinburgh on June 29th and 30th and Drupon Rinpoche will be teaching here on October 27th
By then we hope to be settled in our new Centre in Leith so it will be especially auspicious to welcome these eminent Lamas to our new home. Details and bookings for these teachings will be posted online nearer the time. Watch this space!

Thank You – and last but not least, thank you for all your kindness, support and get well messages. They seem to have worked! I look forward to seeing some of you at our Losar Chenrezi Puja and at many other activities throughout the year. Please note that the Shrines and Offerings course will now be on Saturday February 13th and the Volunteer prepping and painting at KSDE Leith on Sunday 14th (then all the following weekends throughout the month.) Many hands make light work!

May all beings be happy and create the causes of happiness,

Ani Rinchen Khandro

Important Notice: Change of Dates

Having been on the receiving end of numerous emails from people too poorly to attend various events at Samye Dzong in recent weeks, it is now my turn to succumb to the dreaded ‘flu bug! Unfortunately this means that I will be unable to teach this weekend’s Shrines and Offerings course on Saturday February 6th or to oversee the volunteer work at our new Leith Centre on Sunday the 7th.

I do apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you but, even if I felt strong enough, I doubt you would thank me for passing on the infection! As it is I feel more like, what my dear mother was prone to describe as, a washed out rabbit. However, I am usually quite resilient and hope to resume my commitments at Samye Dzong next week

Please note that the Shrines and Torma Offerings Course is now rescheduled for Saturday February 13th and the Leith volunteer work for Sunday February 14th.

Thank you for your patience and understanding of impermanence. With prayers and good wishes for your health and happiness throughout the New Year and beyond.

Ani Rinchen Khandro

An Exciting Announcement

Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche announcement

Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche, flanked by Tulku Ogyen Nyima and Ani Rinchen Khandro, makes a historic announcement on the occasion of Kagyu Samye Dzong Edinburgh’s 5th Anniversary at the Walker Street Centre.

A wonderful 5th Anniversary weekend of Refuge Ceremony, Dharma Teachings, Film Show, Meditation Instruction and Guru Rinpoche Shower of Blessing Puja, was crowned with the exciting announcement by Lama Yeshe Rinpoche of a new and larger Centre for Kagyu Samye Dzong Edinburgh!

Just over a month ago, when Ani Rinchen Khandro was in Germany, she asked His Holiness Karmapa to give his blessing for a somewhat larger centre for KSDE. Once back in Edinburgh she found a beautiful building that was originally built in the 1800’s as The Leith Bank. Thanks to the power of His Holiness’s blessing we have managed to acquire it for the new Samye Dzong.

We will start work on the new building in early December and will need many volunteers, both skilled and unskilled, to lend a hand with adapting the building to our needs so please earmark some time in your diary to come and lend a helping hand. We will be giving more details about this in the coming months. Meanwhile, donations to help with the refurbishment and decoration are also vitally important so please do visit the donation page on our website to make your contribution.

For now we will continue to run our regular programme of courses and events at our lovely, but slightly too small, Walker Street Centre and look forward to seeing you there very soon.

A sneak preview: An historical drawing of the Leith Bank, soon to be the new Samye Dzong Edinburgh at 25 Bernard and 25 Maritime Street, Leith. Call it karma or coincidence but His Holiness Karmapa gave his blessing in the Maritime Hotel in Bonn!

The KSD Edinburgh Autumn 2015 Programme and Latest News

His Holiness Karmapa peruses the Edinburgh Programme

His Holiness Karmapa peruses the Edinburgh Programme

Last week in Bonn, Germany His Holiness the 17th Karmapa gave four full days of precious teachings and empowerments to an international gathering of devotees. Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche kindly arranged a private audience with His Holiness, for attendees from Samye Ling and various Samye Dzongs, during which arose the special opportunity for Ani Rinchen Khandro to present an offering and a copy of the KSD Edinburgh Autumn Programme to His Holiness. Karmapa seemed most interested so hopefully you will be too!

As well as our regular weekly schedule of meditation and prayer sessions, which are drop in and by donation, there are also two new Qigong courses, starting on Monday September 7th and Wednesday the 9th, which can be booked online.

The highlight of September promises to be a wonderful weekend of teachings and guided meditation with Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche, as well as a brilliant film show and a special Guru Rinpoche Shower of Blessings Tsok Puja, to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of KSD Edinburgh. Lama Rinpoche will also bestow Refuge Ceremony for those people wishing to formally enter the Buddhist faith. As this weekend is likely to be a popular event you are advised to book early.

In addition to the scheduled events Ani Rinchen Khandro has offered to give instruction on the Shower of Blessings Puja for those people wishing to familiarise themselves with the Sadhana ahead of the Anniversary weekend. If you have already taken Refuge and would like to receive this instruction on Saturday September 19th from 10.30am to 12.30pm, (suggested donation £10), please email your request asap toinfo@edinburgh.samye.org

And finally, we would like to thank our lovely volunteers John, Woyciek and Justyna for all their kind help in keeping Samye Dzong Edinburgh running smoothly and we wish them well on their travels. Their absence means that we are now short of volunteers so if you have one afternoon a week free and would like to help out at the Centre we’d love to hear from you!

We look forward to seeing you again at Samye Dzong Edinburgh from Monday September 7th when we re-open for the Autumn Term.

August Holidays

Kagyu Samye Dzong Edinburgh will be closed throughout August.

We wish you all a happy and peaceful time during the summer break and look forward to seeing you again in the new term starting on Monday September 7th.

Meanwhile do keep an eye on our website and online shop for updated information, course bookings and recordings of precious teachings.

Happy 30th Birthday to His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa

We wish to update you about a minor change to our previous email and also an exciting new addition.

The minor alteration is that, due to a late change in the topics for debate, Ani Rinchen Khandro will not be appearing on next Sunday’s edition of The Big Questions. However, her contribution to Monday’s Woman’s Hour is going ahead as planned.

The important addition to our programme concerns His Holiness the 17th Karmapa, whose 30th birthday is on June 26th 2015. As there is a double 10th lunar day this month we will celebrate His Holiness’s birthday on the Last Saturday of June 27th 2015, which is also Guru Rinpoche day, by doing a Guru Rinpoche Shower of Blessings Tsok Puja. There is no need to book but please let us know if you wish to attend. Offerings and/or donations appreciated.

June 27th 2015 – The Last Saturday Schedule
10.30am – A brief explanation of the Shower of Blessings Puja by Ani Rinchen Khandro
11.00am The Shower of Blessings Tsok Puja in Honour of His Holiness the 17th Karmapa’s 30th Birthday (tsok offerings welcome).
12.00pm Sharing Tsok and Birthday Cake
2.00pm – 4.00pm The Centre will be open for personal practice.

We hope that you will join us for this joyous event, which will also be a good opportunity to become familiar with the Puja, especially as we will be doing it again it in September 2015 with Lama Yeshe Rinpoche as part of the 5th Anniversary celebrations KSD Edinburgh. But more of that nearer the time!

Holy Week – May 26th & June 2nd 2015

May 26th marks the Buddha’s birthday, and June 2nd marks the Buddha’s Enlightenment.

This year these two major dates in the Buddhist calendar fall on consecutive Tuesdays. Therefore, in addition to our regular Tuesday evening Chenrezi Puja at 6.30pm, we will be reciting the Twelve Deeds of the Buddha, chanting his mantra and offering lights and katas.

Everyone is welcome.

We are happy to announce that both Ringu Tulku Rinpoche and Drupon Rinpoche also send their best wishes for the New Year to everyone at KSD Edinburgh and have agreed to come and teach here in the summer and autumn respectively. We’ll keep you posted once the exact dates are confirmed.

November & December at KSDE

Here’s a wee reminder that this Friday, November 14th is a Wheel Day and we will be offering prayers to the Buddha at 6.30pm. This will be followed at 7pm by a screening of Brilliant Moon, the award winning film about Dilgo Khentse Rinpoche narrated by Richard Gere. Everyone welcome!

Additionally, our Last Saturday event on November 29th from 10.30am to 12.30pm will be aMusic Class with instruction on how to play sacred instruments, including drums, bells, cymbals, conch and radong. This class is open to all those who have taken Refuge and who wish to participate more fully in Pujas. The Shrine Room and The Peace Hall will be available in the afternoon for people wishing to do their Ngondro or other meditation practice.

And finally, news that Ani Rinchen Khandro will traveling to Bodhgaya in India this December to attend the Kagyu Monlams Prayers for World Peace with His Holiness Karmapa and a great gathering of Rinpoches, monks, nuns and lay devotees from around the world. Ani Rinchen will be taking offerings on behalf of Samye Ling and Samye Dzong Edinburgh and is happy to receive your offerings before December 7th.

We look forward to seeing you at KSD Edinburgh for these auspicious events. May all beings be happy and create the causes of happiness.
